Single Review//Blacklisters – ‘I Can Confirm’

Blacklisters’s new single is exactly what you’d expect. It’s a mind-fucking, ear-murdering masterpiece of uncontrollable noise from Leeds’ finest. Taken from their upcoming debut album that’s due out sometime in 2012 (hopefully it will be before the world ends); it’s an excellent teaser to what will be one of next year’s truly skull-crushing releases.

When we take it out of the context of the album though, it’s still a beast of a track. The unmistakably haunting, gritty vocals are one of the highlights of I Can Confirm. At times the vocals seem almost completely separate from the song, leaving a spine-chilling mark long after you’ve shut down your iPod (this is a download-only single). Add the ear-piercing guitars, unsettling basslines and thundering drums, and you can easily imagine this as the soundtrack to a Rob Zombie gorefest.

There’s always been that element of disturbed going-ons in the music that Blacklisters create and perform. Their live performances are not unlike getting a private viewing of a schizophrenic, paranoia-induced dream. That’s quite an achievement for a band without any sort of onstage gimmicks, and a whole other level to effectively convey that without any visual accompaniment, as is the case with this brilliant song.
